Meeting Steph Curry

Here’s the thing: It wasn’t in that room, sitting next to Steph Curry that I finally let go of my fears.

It was years in the making. Walking through seasons of pain, failure and hardship. I wasn’t always known as a designer and I definitely haven’t always had these kinds of opportunities. But when you put your trust in God and believe that you were made for more, he will take you to places that you yourself could never get to on your own.

Letting go of fear is the first step to finding your true calling.

Fear is a liar and it holds you back from who God has called you to be. I’ve spent years practicing facing my fears. Being put in positions to fail or fly. I grew up shy and quiet. I was scared of taking risks and even more of speaking in front of others. I hated when my dad would ask me to pray at dinner and even more when he would intentionally push me to speak in front of others.

To be who God has created you to be, you have to be comfortable at being uncomfortable.

It’s a tough lesson I learned at a young age from my Dad. He knew my potential and wasn’t going to let my fears or doubts hold me back. See growing up and being a massive basketball fan, I always dreamed of playing in the league. Realizing quickly at 6’3” and with an average (at best) jump shot, that wasn’t going to happen. I knew there had to be more to my story.

God took my mediocre jump shot and turned it into a life long passion to serve him. I don’t get paid millions of dollars and no kid will ever collect my basketball cards, but my passions weren’t just a childhood obsession, it was what God was using to bring me closer to him and put me in a position to further his kingdom.

People think that in order to follow Christ they have to let go of the things they absolutely love. As a kid, I imagined a life devoted to Christ as a hut in Africa disconnected from the world and most importantly sports. Not that being a missionary overseas is wrong by any means, but not everyone is called to it. We are all created uniquely for his purpose. My passions and interest might not be yours, but if you give them to God and let go of everything that holds you back, what could God be doing in your life?

I grew up with Jordan telling me I could fly, but @stephencurry30 leads his brand with “I can do all things”. I’ve admired his game for years, but even more than that, I’ve looked up to his positive influence on this generation and culture. His love for his kids and his wife is inspirational and real. Being able to work alongside Steph and his team was a dream come true for me. A moment in time that I get to sit back and say, “Dang, God you are so good.”

What is your “mediocre jump shot”? Let me ask it like this: What is a passion or love of yours that God has placed on your heart that he can be used to further His kingdom? What have you been holding on to? What fears are you facing that’s keeping you from being who God has created you to be?
